PROJECT DESCRIPTION.

The projected action is the construction and operation of a 600 hm3/year desalination plant. The projected installation consists of the following elements:

  1. Desalination plant with a production capacity of 600 hm3/year located in the Escombreras valley in the municipality of Cartagena. This location is supported by the absence of Posidonea oceanica meadows on the maritime coast, or other habitats that could be affected by the discharge of wastewater. The plot will occupy an approximate area of about 60 hectares of industrial land in the indicated area and will capture seawater through four tunnels of 3,000 mm in diameter and about 1,900 meters in length. The discharge will be carried out through three tunnels of 3,000 mm in diameter and about 2,000 m in length. The reverse osmosis process consists of applying pressure on a seawater solution and making it pass through a semipermeable membrane whose function is to allow the solvent (water) to pass through it, but not the solute (dissolved salts). The solvent (water) passes through the membrane, from the side where the concentration of salts is higher to the side where the concentration of salts is lower, producing desalinated water. The result is that the concentrated part of the solution is exhausted in favor of the sweet one, which is increased. To guarantee adaptation to the most demanding agricultural demands, it is contemplated that the product water contains a boron of less than 0.3 mg/l.

  2. Product water conduction that will allow the distribution of produced water from the desalination plant to the post-transfer channels and to a regulation reservoir located in the municipality of Jumilla. The pipeline will be made up of two 3,000 mm diameter helically welded steel pipes with a length of about 135 km. To raise the water to the regulation reservoir, it will be necessary to build a total of three pumping stations that will allow the water to be raised to the delivery points. Associated with the pumping stations, regulation ponds will also be built to facilitate the operation of the pumps and allow, where appropriate, the diversion and supply to users.

For the production of desalinated water and the pumping of the produced water, an energy consumption per cubic meter of 5.0 to 5.3 Kwh/m3 is necessary. This means that a total installed power of about 400 MW will be necessary. The production of desalinated water and the pumping of water to the regulation reservoir will operate 8,760 hours annually.

  3. Water regulation and storage reservoir with a capacity of about 230 hm3 and an estimated flooding surface of about 1,050 hectares. It is projected in the area of Las Contiendas, on the Rambla de La Raja, in the municipality of Jumilla. To dispose of this reservoir, it is necessary to construct a dam with a height above the channel of 80 meters that will have an approximate length at its crest of about 2,000 m. Photovoltaic plant with a power of 2,700 MW. The photovoltaic plant is planned for a site that occupies approximately 5,300 hectares in the municipality of Caravaca, on dry land not affected by environmental protections.

  4. Combined Cycle powered by gas and hydrogen of 838 MW

  5. Hydrogen generating plant for Combined Cycle
